To our east lies the second capital of Georgia, the historic city of Augusta, once home to Woodrow Wilson and George Walton (youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence and one of three Georgians with that distinction). A visit to this fair city includes the National Science Center's Fort Discovery, one of the nation's leading interactive museums for physical science and technology offering over 200 hands-on exhibits. Students will attend a special demonstration as well as a presentation in the Discovery Theater featuring a variety of special effects. Those looking for a natural history setting should consider either the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center or Phinizy Swamp where students will be guided through interpretive programs focused on wetlands ecology (boat ride on the canal included at the Augusta Canal). Although a visit to Phinizy Swamp or the Augusta Canal may provide enough activities to justify either as the sole destination for your field trip, it can certainly be combined with Fort Discovery, a visit to the Columbus History Museum or a guided tour of the Historic District. Your students will be impressed with the bounty of interesting people and events described during the guided tour of the Historic District which may be tailored to fit curriculums for U.S. and Georgia history.
The Bulloch House is back and good as ever!
In a single day, combine one of the nation's most scenic "garden spots" with one of its most historic. Callaway Gardens is the setting of the ever popular Day Butterfly Center as well as Mr. Cason's Victory Gardens, the Discovery Center featuring the fascinating “Birds of Prey” program and the Sibley Horticultural Center. You may choose to visit any two or three of these locations. You may opt for a buffet style lunch served at the stately Bulloch House in Warm Springs, a pizza picnic or a quality boxed lunch picnic served at Callaway Gardens, the Little White House or FDR State Park. While in Warm Springs, students will tour The Little White House, Museum and the Therapeutic Pools thereby learning about one of America’s most popular presidents and gaining an understanding of the Depression and World War II eras in American History.
Tucked amid the wooded streams and rolling farmland of this scenic countryside is a treasure trove of educational opportunities. Columbus is well known for Fort Benning, with its recently opened and very impressive National Infantry Museum within its sprawling military base. Columbus is also home to the Coca-Cola Space Science Center which offers simulator programs in its Challenger Center as well as a multimedia presentation in the Omnisphere Theater. Other outstanding offerings in Columbus are the Civil War Naval Museum (offering both guided and self guided tours) with its numerous authentic artifacts and knowledgeable staff describing the often overlooked roles of both Blue and Gray navies, guided walking tours of the Historic District and the Columbus History Museum.
See Georgia from a whole new perspective with a ride the SAM Shortline Railroad from Cordele to Plains. A lunch stop will be made in Americus where everyone will be served from the Southern Buffet the Windsor Hotel. For an extended day field trip you may choose to add a stop in Andersonville or Macon.
Spend the morning in Pine Mountain at the Wild Animal Safari where students will be treated to an extensive tour of the exotic animals on display in recreated African habitats. You may wish to combine this visit with an afternoon in Warm Springs at The Little White House and lunch at the Bulloch House.
In Lumpkin, you may visit the historic village of Westville featuring circa 1850 recreations of houses, shops, public buildings and work processes.
A visit to the Civil War POW Camp, Museum and Cemetery in Andersonville conjures haunting images of the events of the War Between the States. The museum on the grounds is dedicated to POW’s of all armed conflicts. Students will attend an excellent introductory video as well as an interpretive program about the Prison and Cemetery presented by a National Park Service ranger.
In Plains, the history and accomplishments of President Jimmy Carter will be brought to life by National Park Service rangers. Students will also visit the museum housed in the old Plains High School and see the site of Nobel Peace Prize winner President Carter’s boyhood home.
Many variations on this field trip are available to suit your unit of study. You may choose from a boxed lunch in Columbus or Plains, or if including Warm Springs, lunch may be served at the Bulloch House. Dinner may also be included for an extended day.
This field trip presents students with a study of Georgia's coastal ecological systems and fascinating American and Georgia history. On Cumberland Island, students will be guided to points of interest including the old Carnegie ruins (Dungeness), the salt marsh, maritime forest and the beach. You determine in advance what emphasis is to be given to each area based on your focus. On Jekyll Island you may attend an “in depth” program at the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center. Students may enjoy a tour of the St. Simons Lighthouse or a self guided tour and interpretive program at the Hofwyl - Broadfield Plantation. If you wish, you may opt for guided education programs at the Okefeenokee Swamp, Oatland Island Education Center, Skidaway Marine Science Center or Tybee Marine Science Center.
This one day field trip combines the history of Dahlonega with the natural beauty of Amicalola Falls or Unicoi State Park. In Dahlonega, home of America’s first Gold Rush in 1829, students will be guided through the Gold Museum then tour Consolidated Mines and pan for gold. To give this field trip a truly special flavor, lunch will be provided, family style, at The Smith House. At Unicoi OR Amicalola State Parks, you may choose any two programs from a variety of those instructed by the naturalists on staff at the Park including such subjects as orienteering, walking programs with studies on local flora and various indigenous animal programs including “Birds of Prey”. Similar interpretive programs are also available at Amicalola Falls State Park.

This diversified field trip favors studies in archaeology, Native American culture and history, geology and American / Georgia history. The Booth Cowboy Museum in Cartersville offers students an interesting and entertaining look at the role played by local “agricultural transportation engineers” in early American History. At New Echota and the Etowah Indian Mounds (very limited dates and times), students will learn about early Native American History through interpretive programs led by park rangers. Chickamauga National Battlefield is an excellent background for gaining an understanding of the life and trials of a typical Civil War soldier. The staff at the Tellus Science Museum featuring the Weinman Mineral Exhibits will provide students with myriad examples of the types of rocks and minerals found in the area, an understanding of how geologists study their finds and the common usage of many of these materials in products we use in our homes, schools and businesses. Vulcan Materials Company in Kennesaw offers students a close investigation of a modern mining operation. A company representative will take students into the quarry and discuss the importance of this industry to our everyday lives. The Funk Heritage Museum, on the campus of Reinhardt Uniersity is an excellent venue for students studying North Georgia history. Their vast collection of early American tools is complimented by exhibits and a video presentation describing native American cultures who have inhabited the North Georgia area.
The Savannah area is quite rich in historic, cultural and marine science treasures. Student groups may choose from a variety of guided tours of the Historic District customized to complement your curriculum; Historic, Victorian, architectural and "Haunted Legends", to name a few. This Atlanta landmark, so prodigious that it is visible from the space station in orbit, is home to a recently enhanced theme park style educational and entertainment facility. This manadnoc called Stone Mountain is the largest exposed piece of granite in the world. It is also the world’s largest high relief sculpture which depicts three confederate war heroes (Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson) and is still the backdrop to the famous laser light show during the summer months. Year around, the park offers educational groups a well-rounded variety of exhibits and activities including Tales of the South 4-D Theater, a Train Ride around the park and a self-guided a tour of the Antebellum Plantation. A picnic lunch will be provided at the park.
Adjacent to Warner Robins Air Force Base is the Aviation Museum featuring Smithsonian-like exhibits of virtually every type of flying machine ever conceived. Students will be treated to a facilitator guided educational activity and a wide screen format movie. Also on certain days, students will be invited to participate in a rocketry demonstration. You may wish to consider combining a visit to Warner Robins with any of a number of destinations from Macon south.
